School road patrollers play an important role in keeping their classmates and communities safe across Aotearoa, operating the ‘lollipop’ signs on the busy roads outside school grounds during pick-up and drop-off.
The AA has proudly supported school patrols for many years, partnering with NZ Police, NZTA and Community Road Safety Coordinators to help enable safer journeys for Kiwi kids. Lollipop Legends celebrates these incredible road patrol teams, recognising the difference they make in our efforts towards safer roads, rain, hail or shine.
If a school has a road patrol, staff can nominate them for a chance to win one of two $10,000 grants to improve safety at their school, along with a special celebration event to recognise their contributions attended by rugby legend Renee Holmes!
There will be one winning school in the North Island and one in the South Island.
If you’re a family member or friend of your local school, encourage them to enter today.
Entries close: Sunday 26 July 2026
School staff can submit a nomination by:
Sharing how your school would use the grant to improve safety for students and/or the community – you could replace playground equipment, install a bike shed to keep bikes safe, or create a mural to remind kids about road safety. The opportunities are endless!
Tell us about the impact the grant would have on your school and how it would help.
This competition is open to primary schools that have a school road patrol team associated with a NZ Police School Community Officer or other recognised NZ transport authority. Entries must be made by a member of the school staff.
Entries will be reviewed by a judging panel made up of the organisations that work together to make road patrols a reality - AA, NZ Police, NZ Transport Agency and SASTA. Selected nominations may be shared on AA channels, with winning schools featured in AA Directions magazine.
