Editor celebrates quarter century with NZ’s most read magazine

Kath Webster, editor of the AA’s beloved lifestyle, motoring and travel magazine; AA Directions, is marking 25 years at the helm of the publication.  

Kath began her journalism career at a newspaper in Whangārei, before moving to Auckland. She was the editor of a quarterly arts magazine before joining AA Directions in 2001 as deputy editor, subsequently taking the reins as editor a few years later.  

She says it’s a privilege to bring the stories of Kiwi to over 680,000 households for as long as she has. 

‘I can’t believe how quickly 25 years has flown by! I’ve been on wonderful adventures and met some remarkable people thanks to this magazine.” 

Historically heavily motoring focused, AA Directions underwent a transformation in the early 2000s to incorporate more lifestyle and travel content, drawing Kath to the role in the first place. 

“Once I became editor, we continued working on the recipe to create a magazine that was about New Zealanders, for New Zealanders - still featuring motoring, driver interest stories, and AA content, but also road trips and international travel stories, and a bigger emphasis on design and photography. The most recent additions have been a home and living section including economic wellbeing content. 

“We want to give our readers lots of variety as well as an inclusive, welcoming experience.  We also give a lot of thought to the flow of the magazine. There’s a mix of long and short articles, photographs and illustrations, so there’s something for everyone. 

“In the latest issue we’ve had a story about a 3D-printed house, a deep dive into the life of EV batteries, a Coromandel road trip, taking care of pets in an emergency, a behind-the-scenes tour into one of New Zealand’s most famous TV shows, and a competition for a Royal NZ Ballet prize pack.” 

“We have endless story inspiration coming from Kiwi.” 

For several years, AA Directions has consistently featured at the top of readership surveys as New Zealand’s most widely-read magazine, Kath believes that’s testament to the far-reaching AA Membership base. It’s also what’s kept her with the magazine for 25 years.  

“As a Member organisation we love showing the diversity of our communities. Our own Members do outstanding things to influence and change the lives of New Zealanders, and it’s a pleasure to bring their stories to the nation. It’s just another way the AA puts its Members at the heart of everything we do.” 

In recent years, the magazine has evolved to include a biannual digital version, though Kath says there’s something extra special about the print versions. 

“I think more people are looking to escape screens and the constant buzz of social media. Settling down with a cup of tea and flicking through a magazine has appeal, especially if it’s delivered to your home. 

“However, the added bonus of the online content means you can read AA Directions anywhere, anytime.”
