Tips for Christchurch cyclists and motorists during Bike Wise Month

February is Bike Wise Month so more people are out cycling, particularly on Go By Bike Day next Wednesday 16 February.

The Canterbury AA encourages people to get on their bikes and make the most of the summer weather, but says conditions on the roads require some extra care at the moment.

“Christchurch cyclists and motorists are still having to pay extra attention on earthquake-damaged roads,” says Canterbury AA Chairman Warren Masters.

“Roads are in varying states of repair. Around the inner city in particular there are some temporary fixes with uneven and unsealed surfaces and some roads are narrower with lanes closed or construction blockades,” he says.

In addition, on some days seasonal strong nor-west winds can be dangerous, says Mr Masters. “Cyclists can be blown about by gusts and drivers need to be careful that car doors are not caught by the wind.”

Now that school is back, the roads are also busier with more school cyclists so everyone needs to take special care, he says.

Mr Masters encourages cyclists to keep themselves safe by obeying the road rules and following some simple safety advice. He says motorists need to always check for cyclists and give them plenty of space. Both cyclists and motorists should always ride or drive allowing a good margin for error, he says.

AA tips for five-star cyclists:

  • Obey the road rules
  • Make sure you’re highly visible
  • Wear a helmet
  • Use dedicated cycle lanes where they’re provided
  • Avoid busy streets if possible
  • Don’t ride two abreast on narrow roads
  • Be extra careful at intersections – drivers focusing on finding a gap in the traffic can overlook less visible cyclists

AA tips for five-star motorists:

  • Be patient when waiting to pass cyclists – they have the same rights to the road as you
  • Give cyclists plenty of space when you’re passing, and even more when it’s windy in case the cyclist is caught by a gust and swerves unexpectedly
  • Check for cyclists before you pull out into the traffic
  • Check for cyclists before you open vehicle doors
