AA conducts regular surveys with large groups of our 1.2 million Members to gather their views on transport. Sharing real experiences and opinions from across New Zealand plays a vital role in shaping traffic policy.

The government is reviewing fines and penalties for unsafe driving. Many fines remain the same as they were in 1999, raising questions about how effective they may be now.

In early 2025,  we surveyed over 2000 Members via our A Member Voices Panel to understand their views on whether they think current fines and penalties are working to prevent unsafe driving. We also asked Members' view on how the system could be improved.

Topics included:

  • AA Members’ experience with unsafe driving, such as speeding, using mobile phones, and fatigue.
  • How much Members support initiatives to strengthen fines and penalties, including views on alternative penalties for those on low or no income, and increased fines and penalties for repeat offenders.

The AA advocates for improvements to local transport on behalf of its Members. This includes issues such as improvements that enhance road safety (e.g. road maintenance, signage, and lighting).

In February 2025, we surveyed Members' on their experiences with local transport, and views on how transport funding and planning should be prioritised.

This included:

  • AA Members’ experience with local transport issues across New Zealand, including public transport, cycling, walking, driving.
  • Priorities for local transport infrastructure impovements and funding.

This information is used by our 18 AA District Councils to advocate on transport issues in their regions .

These results will be available early August 2025.
