AA Member transport survey results

The AA conducts regular surveys with large groups of our 1.1 million Personal Members to gather their views on transport. Sharing real experiences and opinions from across New Zealand plays a vital role in shaping transport policy.

Latest survey results

Every year,  the AA surveys Members to understand their experiences with local transport - including their views on local transport, and how transport funding and planning should be prioritised.

Over 7000 Members shared their perspectives in our 2025 Local Transport Survey.

The topics covered include:

  • AA Members’ experience with local transport issues across New Zealand, including public transport, cycling, walking, driving.
  • Priorities for local transport infrastructure impovements and funding.

The AA uses these survey results to advocate for improvements to transport on behalf of our Members at both a regional and national level. This includes issues that enhance road safety, such as road maintenance, signage, and lighting.

Our 18 AA District Councils around the country use local findings to advocate for transport improvements with local decision-makers, such as local councils. National results help inform the AA's advocacy with central government decision-makers.

The Government is reviewing fines and penalties for unsafe driving. Many fines are currenlty the same as they were in 1999, raising questions about how effective they may be now.

how effective are fines

In December 2024,  we surveyed over 2000 AA Members via our AA Member Voices Panel to understand their views on whether they think current fines and penalties are working to prevent unsafe driving. We also asked Members for their views on how the system could be improved.

Topics included:

  • AA Members experience with unsafe driving; such as speeding, using mobile phones, and fatigue.
  • How much Members support initiatives to strengthen fines and penalties, including views on alternative penalties for those on low or no income, and increased fines and penalties for repeat offenders.
