Hi.
We're in the market for an upgrade to our family car. We live away from family so we'd like a 7 seater for the times when people come to visit, but the majority of the time there's just the 4 of us. Out priorities are safety, reliability, and having space for everyone and suitcases from the airport.

We viewed a 2009 Honda Odyssey on the weekend and loved it. There are just two points that make me nervous: 1) it's a CVT transmission which I recall were an issue around this year and 2) it's only got two airbags.
We also liked the Toyota Wish but the boot space with 7 seats wasn't as good as the Odyssey.
So, can anyone help with my questions:

  • 1. What is the reliability like on the 2009-2012 Honda Odyssey (any known/common issues)?

  • 2. Can you get the Odyssey in this era with more than two airbags, and is this important? Interestingly, on Trademe the Odyssey with 2 airbags has a 5 star safety rating while the Wish (even with 8 airbags) only has four stars.

Are going to be better off with the Wish or is there anything else we should consider (approx $10K price)?

We are not aware of any common issues with this model.

In terms of used imports it a bit of a mixed bag what specs they come with. Their ratings also depend on which way they have been assessed for more info check out the link https://rightcar.govt.nz/#/safety-ratings

Another candidate worth considering is the Mazda Premacy you can find low km 2011 models around the $10,000 mark.
