If I buy a car privately after all the relevant checks pass what are the steps taken to transfer payment for the change of ownership. Is there a foolproof method of ensuring the transaction is completed without fraud by either party?

1 Make your own sales agreement or contract with the seller, and only complete this once you have received a payment in cash or have the funds received into you account with acknowledgment from you bank.

2 Save copies of your sales agreement, the original advert and any other documentation related to the sale.

4 Tell NZ Transport Agency the car has a change of owners. Both the seller and buyer need to do this. You can do this online through NZ Transport Agency’s Online Services.

Note* If someone has a international licence have them accompany you to the AA licencing centre or Post shop with their passport to change the ownership in front of you don't rely on them doing this themselves.
