We are looking for a second vehicle for long distance travel between the islands to visit family but also to go on adventure around some more difficult places.

We have a large 30kg tent to carry also along with our own gear(only two of us most times) which would happen during a few weeks of the holidays as well as many weekends during the year.

While we could afford nearly any vehicle, we don't want to throw all our eggs in one basket since because it will depreciate even after one year. We'd like a 4WD but are unsure whether to go for a SUV or a Ute.

What would recommend we consider around $30-35K?

Below is a list of options we have considered:

Land Cruiser range(earlier years are cheaper)
Ford Ranger or Toyota Hilux or Navara
Ford Territory
Nissan Xtrail or Pathfinder
Jeep Cherokee (and Trailhawk)
Toyota Highlander
Hyundai Santa Fe

Thanks,

Vernon

Hi there,
This is quite a list.
They each have a few plus and minus.
I would recommend getting the newest and safest vehicle you budget allows.
The Highlander is generally a V6 petrol and so would be quite hungry on fuel loaded up and travelling.
The Jeep is a good vehicle for the off-road but may not be as reliable as some.
The Land Cruiser is a very popular choice and also holds it's value so you would be looking at an older model with possible high km's.
Nothing wrong with the Ute options.
Pathfinder on a similar thought to the Cruiser, x-trail could be a bit small for what you need?
The only negative I have heard on the Sante-Fe is driveline issues which is reported to mismatched tyre tread when not replacing all tyres at the same time.

Much appreciated. Thanks for your help!

Out of all the utes i would personally go for a Ranger 3.2L. If you going to be on the open road a lot and towing - Highly recommend a tune by Speed Ministry SpeedMinistry.co.nz. Made huge difference on our 2018 Wildtrack.
Navaras are ok ish, but super rattly and noisy.
Stay with diesels and you will be good.
