My brother-in-law suffers from poor memory and has given up his driving licence. His son has power of attorney but does not drive and I have been helping with managing his father. We have little information about the car with a vanity plate Rego MMTKAR and would like to know:
1) how do we manage the vanity plates when we sell? I don't think the family puts any value on the vanity plate?
2) Can the son sell the car without any documentation other than the number plate?

Hi there,
You can just leave the personalized plates on the car when you sell it, you will need to complete the following form https://www.plates.co.nz/assets/pdfs/right-to-receive-transfer.pdf
Or you can remove the plates and fit new standard Government issue plates and sell the plates separately.
Change of ownership can be carried out online so no documents required, however you may need a window card and a sales agreement depending on how you are intending to sell the car. I also recommend have a letter giving the seller right to sell as they are not the vehicle owner. https://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicles/buying-and-selling-a-vehicle/selling-a-vehicle/
