I have just purchased a 1994 Ford Telstar from a Registered Motor Vehicle Dealer.

The Dealer said a new Warrant of Fitness would be issued as part of the sale agreement and the car passed its inspection with no problems.

Within an hour of me taking delivery, I noticed something that was not apparent on my original test drive; both rear shock absorbers were far softer then they should be and need replacing.

How can a car pass a warrant with bad shock absorbers and what are my rights involved in getting this problem solved?

There is no performance check on rear shock absorbers during a WoF inspection.

The inspector will carry out a visual inspection of the shock absorbers only looking for oil leaks, checking mounting points, bushes and general condition.

If you feel the car has a problem I suggest you go back to the car Dealer concerned to discuss your concerns. The Dealer must be given the opportunity to get the car checked out from a repairer of their choice.

It may well be the suspension is in keeping with the cars age/mileage.

You of course have the option of seeking another opinion but you should not authorise any work to be carried out in the expectation the Dealer will cover the costs.
