When I last had my vehicle serviced the mechanic said the brake linings were getting worn, but I would know when they need changing because I would hear a squeaking sound when doing slow turns. What did he mean?

The brake pads have a wear indicator in them, which will rub against the disc when the pads get low, and make a screeching sound. Some cars have a light on the dash which will display when the pads get low too.
