I have been told by a tyre shop to inflate my tyres to 2 or 3 psi over the recommended tyre pressures to increase mileage obtained from my tyres. Please comment on this recommendation

A couple of PSI over the manufacturer's recommendation isn't going to do any harm. I guess the tyre shop is making this recommendation on the basis that tyres will lose air over time, so if you don't check the pressures regularly you run the risk of running under-inflated tyres, which can cause premature wear and excessive fuel consumption. If you check the pressures regularly, it's probably best to stick to the manufacturer's recommendation.
