How often should you tune a 1998 Mitsubishi Lancer?

The word 'tune' is almost redundant now as electronic engine management controls have replaced the old ignition systems and fuel injection has superseded the carburettor.

As a general rule, a service (oil and filter change plus check other levels and tyre pressures) should be carried out at least once per year or every 10,000kms whichever comes first at which time the air cleaner element should always be inspected. Often an air cleaner element will last several years depending on the conditions and environment the car is being exposed to. Replacement is judged on a visual inspection of the filter element.

Spark plugs are the only other major item to worry about and these can last upwards of around 40,000kms. It comes down to a matter of opinion but I don't believe there is any point in removing spark plugs at every service and checking them unless you don't know when they were replaced last.

Same for the fuel filter, around 40 - 50,000kms would be a reasonable replacement time. This can depend on the type of car and in your case you may need to check with your local Mitsubishi dealer. Fuel filters should be replaced based on distance travelled rather than time.

The key is having a good service provider who looks after your interests and has good communication skills, to help avoid unnecessary high maintenance bills.
