I'm a novice and want to get my wheels and suspension checked. Can you tell me the difference between wheel balancing and wheel alignment?

How much would it cost me for wheel alignment, balancing and a suspension check?

Wheel balancing is checked when a vibration is felt through the vehicle when driving, normally worse at higher speeds.

If the front wheels are out of balance you can normally feel the vibration through the steering wheel, or there can be a noticeable shake of the steering wheel as well.

Wheel alignment is checked and adjusted when there are signs of uneven tyre wear. A visual inspection of the tyres can normally quickly pick up if the alignment is out of specification.

For example, the tyres may show wear on an inside or outside edge or can exhibit 'feathering' when a hand is run across the width of the tyre.

If you have a major problem with the suspension it is normally picked up when you have a Warrant of Fitness inspection.

Don't hold me to this but I would think at the retail cost could be around the $150 mark to have all of the above checked and adjusted. This could escalate rapidly if worn suspension components were found and remedied.

The key is to find a trusted service provider who will carry out the work required in keeping with the vehicles age and mileage while at the same time ensure the car is roadworthy and safe.
