Hi,
Just wondering if anyone knows what mileage a new car should last under the consumer garantees act nz.

My mum has a Hyundai i 30 2009 done 80,000 kms and has had a auto transmission failure.
Car is out of the manufacturers warranty period of 3 years but under the milage period of 100,00 kms. Warranty states whichever is first.

Just wondering if I have any support through the consumer guarantees act and how long they think a new car should last for in mileage terms.

in my experience cars should easily last over 100,000 kms before any repairs or fault is evident.

Any information would be much appreciated before contacting the dealers.

cheers

Hi there,
Has your mum owned the car from new?.
A 6 year old car would have no CGA claim if you have owned it for this time.
The CGA states a reasonable amount of time, not km's.
Ideally you would want many km's from a new car. In some cases if a car is not long out of warranty period, the dealer may help out as "good will". However 6 years is a long time out of warranty.

I think it would be very highly unlikely that repairs on a used car that was purchased almost 3 years ago would be considered to be the responsibility of the retailer, and equally, that repairs on a 6 year old car that is no longer owned by the original owner would be considered to be the responsibility of the manufacturer.
Unfortunately, there comes a time in the life of any product where the responsibility of repairs and maintenence is that of the owner, not the manufacturer or retailer, and in this instance I think that time has passed.
However, there's nothing stopping you from seeking assistance from the dealer, but I wouldn't expect it would be forthcoming.
If you still don't agree, you can have the matter heard by the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal, but in light of all the circumstances, a successful application would seem highly unlikely.
