I am trying to find out exactly what taxes are included in petrol and diesel prices.

All I have found is approximate total percentage for petrol (47%?).

Does diesel have any taxes included in the price?

I bought an economical 1.6 diesel as I do 600k per week. If RUC could be a bit fairer for those of us trying to use less fuel I would be a whole lot better off. At current prices I am about $13 per week ahead of a similar sized petrol car.

Details on petrol taxes (excluding GST) are contained on the AA website .

The only taxes on diesel are GST, plus 0.355 cents/litre for a monitoring levy and local authority tax (which is also included in the 52.549c/l petrol excise).

The AA has called for RUC to be reviewed to incentivise light vehicles. The Government has made a start by introducing a new, lower 2,000kg threshold with a slightly lower levy, and an independent review of the entire RUC system is now underway.

We also understand the Ministry of Transport is looking at other ways of incentivising light diesels.

Make sure you keep the diesel well serviced as engine repairs can be a lot more expensive than petrol.
