What are the requirements of a driver who is transporting up to 300L of diesel in a purpose built trailer mounted tank, which is displaying all required signage. Does the driver need to be licenced for dangerous goods, and is any extra paperwork required to be carried?

Also what are the requirements of a driver who is transporting petrol or diesel in 20L purpose made plastic Jerry Cans in the back of a Ute? Is there a maximum amount that can be carried this way?

If you are carrying in excess of 50 litres or 50kg of dangerous goods, you are required to hold a D Endorsement (Dangerous Goods), or have someone travel in the vehicle who holds a D Endorsement.
Further information is available on the NZTA website, outlining the requirements.

Actually, it depends on what you are transporting and what you are transporting it for - if you are transporting petrol or diesel for domestic use or recreational use, the maximum is 250 litres. See NZTA Factsheet 69

Yes, good point. I had assumed that 300 litres on a purpose-built trailer would be for commercial use.

Thank you. I have checked the NZTA website and learned that we are transporting it as "Tools of the Trade." Under this we can carry up to 250L of diesel without needing a Dangerous Goods endorsement. The containers or trailer needs to be tagged with UN numbers etc and we need to carry emergency information in the front of the vehicle. Thank you for your info.
