I was wanting to know the rules regarding operating a motorised bike on the road.

That is to say a regular push bike that is fitted with a engine that can be used along with or instead of the pedals.

The bike becomes a moped (motor-pedal), and is therefore limited to a top speed of 50km/h and have a power output of 2kW or less.

It must be registered but a WoF is not necessary. The bike must also meet approved standards for lights and brakes, refer to fact sheet 43 on the NZ Transport Agency website

An approved motorcycle helmet must also be worn
