A recent Dominion Post contains the ambiguous statement "From January 3, imported used cars made before 1998 will in effect be banned, unless they meet emissions standards to be toughened in 2009 and 2012".

Does this apply to vehicles imported AFTER January 3 or to ALL pre-1998 imported vehicles?

If the latter is the case, where can I find out if my 1997 Honda CRV will meet the current standards and those to be introduced in 2009 and 2012?

The emission rules only apply to vehicles imported into NZ after Feb 2008.

The new rules do not apply to vehicles currently registered and operating on NZ roads.

The only emission standard that cars driving on NZ roads must currently meet is the 'Smokey Exhaust' test that is currently part of a WOF inspection.

Any emission rule changes in 2009 and 2012 again, only apply to vehicles imported after the prescribed dates.
