What happened to the Government introducing rules regarding tow away signage and standard fines?

We have just had to pay a $250 fine by a Auckland Tow Company to get our car back.

I do remember that the tow away legislation was going to be updated but how long are the public going to be waiting for this to happen.

The reply below is from our Motoring Affairs team based in Wellington.

The Ministry of Transport have looked into the issue of privately-owned car park procedures but as yet there are no proposals to update the legislation.

Currently, the legislation only applies to council-owned car parking. Private firms don’t have to comply with that law, so can make up their own rules, although there are guidelines on minimum signage.

There was talk of a private code of practice but we are not sure if one has been developed.

The AA wants private firms bought under the same law as council carparks, and we will continue lobbying for this.

We encourage you to write to your local MP, the Minister of Transport, Fair Go etc.

The more the public complain, the better the chance we will have at forcing change.
