The Peugeot 5008 has come a long way since its quirky MPV beginnings. Now in its third generation, it’s fully embraced the SUV lifestyle, and thankfully Peugeot hasn’t messed with the winning formula of seven seats and sharp styling. The new 5008 GT is a family hauler with a distinctly French accent, and it speaks the language of style, technology, and practicality.

Quintessential French styling

The new vehicle shows further progression with a design that includes sharper lines and a more distinctive outline. The two-tone paint job with black roof, and signature Three-claw matrix LED headlights flanking the sharp grille is a sporty and contemporary design that reflects Peugeot’s redesigned badge.

The chunky 19-inch diamond cut alloys round off the look, giving the 5008 a rugged charm that’s equally at home in the city or on a gravel driveway.

Seven-seater did you say?

Inside, you’re greeted by a tastefully appointed cabin that’s both functional and fashionable. You get a full-grain leather multifunction steering wheel and optional Nappa leather upholstery, including massaging front seats and heated front and second row seats. The cabin materials are uniquely French, with a chic grey denim-textured material – though cleaning that fabric might cause a headache in the future.

There are three rows that give a full complement of seven seats, but honestly, the third row is more of a last resort than an everyday comfort. Adults will appreciate the sliding and reclining second row, while even kids might find the third row seats a tight squeeze.

Depending on how you arrange the seats, the boot space couldn’t be more different. With all the seats in their upright positions, you get a meagre 348 litres of storage. But fold everything flat, and you get a cavernous 2,232 litres. There’s even a handy storage compartment under the boot floor for the parcel tray and tyre repair kit.

Even more French under the bonnet

Built on the all-new STLA medium platform, the 5008 features a 1.2-litre turbo hybrid powertrain under the bonnet. This delivers 110kW of power and 230Nm of torque, which is adequate for city driving, just don’t expect this to move like a performance SUV. Around town, the 5008 GT feels zippy enough, and the three-cylinder engine adds a charming burble. On the motorway, it cruises comfortably, but overtaking with a full load might require a bit of patience.

With a WLTP figure of 5.4L/100km, Peugeot claims the hybrid will save 15% in fuel reduction from the equivalent petrol version. The six-speed e-DCS6 automatic transmission toggles between EV and hybrid modes, though in practice, the petrol engine did most of the driving.

Technology abounds on the inside

The 5008 GT comes loaded with technology. The curved LED display combines the central touchscreen and driver’s display into one 21-inch panoramic screen. And while the operating system isn’t the most intuitive, Peugeot’s i-Cockpit – featuring customisable shortcuts through the i-Toggles touchscreen below the central screen – helps ease the learning curve.

Connectivity is solid with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a wireless charging pad. Safety features include a 360-degree camera, adaptive lane control, blind spot monitoring, and autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection. All systems worked well, with alerts that are informative without being overly intrusive.

One spec variant

There’s only a single high-spec trim option available in New Zealand for $67,990 +ORC, with optional extras including the Nappa leather pack ($5,990) and a panoramic sunroof ($2,990). It’s competitively priced against rivals like the Skoda Kodiaq, offering a lot of kit for the money.

The verdict

The Peugeot 5008 GT is a stylish, well-equipped family SUV that’s ideal for urban life and the occasional road trip. While the powertrain might feel underwhelming for a fully loaded seven-seater, it makes up for it with efficiency, technology, and a design that turns heads. If you’re after something practical with a dash of European charm, the 5008 GT might just be your next family wagon.

Pros Cons
Elegant, head-turning design. Infotainment system has a steep learning curve.
Practical seven-seat layout. Third-row seating is cramped.
