Audi A4 Avant 2020 Car Review

If there was ever a staple Audi model, it would have to be the A4. They’re rather common on our roads, and arrive here as both NZ new or used imports.

Even some returnees or those immigrating often want to bring their Audis into New Zealand with them.

This year the Audi A4 has undergone quite a change, with the exterior now noticeably different to look at; the word is that only the bonnet, boot and roof survived from the previous model. It’s got new lights, new wheels, more substantial bumpers and even new doors, complete with fresh styling that directs your eyes to the chiselled guard-defining lines above the wheel arches, which has transformed from just a continual line across the wheel arches of its predecessor.

The new Audi A4 S line exterior package comes standard on all models for a sportier appearance. This includes sports suspension, as well as an S-specific radiator grille and diffuser.

Another new exterior feature of the Audi A4 is its progressive lighting design. The standard LED headlights with their specific signature provide unmistakable recognition. The LED technology ensures daylight-quality illumination immediately after switching them on. The rear LED lights come standard with dynamic turn signals. When you unlock or lock the vehicle, the headlights provide you with an impressive light show.

The engine now comes with a mild-hybrid system (MHEV), meaning increased fuel efficiency and drive comfort. Add in the overall driving experience with a new sporty design, and the Audi A4 is the perfect addition to the New Zealand landscape. The Audi A4 is sleek and drives just as smooth as it looks. Customisable options are available if you want to get out on the open road and play with the car’s suspension and performance settings, or you can select comfort mode for a more ‘every day’ experience.

The most notable inside change is the expanded touchscreen and the removal of the Audi MMI controls from the centre console - a small issue now for those that can’t stand smudgy finger marks on their touchscreens. The Audi A4 virtual cockpit comes standard with its 12.3-inch display directly in front of you, showing important functions clearly in a full HD resolution, including your speed and RPM. We are continually impressed by the clear resolution of the Audi screens, which also have the ability to accentuate the navigation system onto your dash.

As well as two exterior options; Sedan or Avant, the Audi A4 has two engine options. The A4 40 TFSI S Line has a petrol-powered 2.0 TFSI engine with 140kW and 320Nm of torque. The A4 45 TFSI quattro S Line, only available in the Avant exterior, has a 2.0 TFSI engine with 180kW and 370Nm of torque. Both engines perform strongly, and offer reduced emissions thanks to the mild-hybrid systems.
