The AA was thrilled to be invited to the official launch of the new land Rover Defender MY26 – a bold evolution of capability, design, and innovation.

The spirit of adventure continues to evolve with the arrival of the 2026 Defender in New Zealand, showcasing small changes to an already exciting design and enhanced capabilities that elevate every off-road experience.

In December last year, we were among the first to experience the new model in an exclusive launch event in Taupō, with special access to key spokespeople, product insights, and story opportunities.

The Defender brand is underpinned by Land Rover – a mark of trust built on more than 75 years of expertise in technology and world-leading off-road capability. So, whether you’re cruising through the busy streets of Auckland, on your way home from a busy day in the office, or tackling the toughest terrain on your weekend adventures, the new Defender is built to handle it all with absolute confidence and enduring versatility.

After a quick PowerPoint presentation and a plan for the day ahead, we embarked on a curated drive through State Forest 70 (SF70) – a challenging 4WD track that offers scenic views of the Rangitaiki Valley. We concluded the day with a dinner at Kinloch Manor, featuring locally grown and sourced ingredients, and not to forget the expansive and breathtaking views over the chiselled Taupo landscape and western bay of Lake Taupo.

Everything we needed was right there on the screen, giving us the confidence to take on obstacles while staying safely and comfortably inside the cabin. This ensured we stayed dry and comfortable all day long while the outside of the cars got mud caked all over them.

Redesigned headlights now create a distinctive, modern signature when illuminated, and the new flush‑fitting taillights feature a dark‑tinted finish that offers both a cleaner look and improved visibility on the road. In addition, a gloss‑black grille bar is now standard and, paired with a dark oval badge, offers a more refined, understated look.

So, let’s talk about the new colours on offer. Who doesn’t like a little change from time-to-time, and the Extreme performance Defender OCTA offers greater personalisation with Borasco Grey and new Sargasso Blue exteriors. The other models also get a refreshed palette of contemporary exterior colours and finishes, including Woolstone Green and Borasco Grey.

The top-spec Defender 130 can now be optioned with an integrated air compressor, making it easy to adjust tyre pressures during multi‑terrain adventures. It’s a simple addition that noticeably boosts the Defender’s capability. We definitely felt the difference when going from the Defender 90 to the Defender 130 – the 130 just feels more capable and off-road ready.

Prices for the Defender start from $128,900 (plus on road costs) and includes a 3500kg tow rating (petrol and diesel models only), so if you’re towing a boat, caravan, or horse float, it’s definitely one to keep on your shortlist.

After spending a full day with the Defender lineup, it’s easy to see why Beauden Barrett didn’t hesitate to take on the role of New Zealand’s Defender ambassador. Each vehicle strikes a balance of capability, comfort, and classic design qualities that naturally match the way Beauden approaches each game.

From the smooth, controlled power of the engines to the sense of security they give you on any terrain, the Defender speaks for itself. For Barret, who’s built a career on resilience and consistent hard work, the partnership feels like a genuine alignment of values.

Well Done, Defender.
