December 2017 petrol and diesel prices

Fuel prices fell another 2 cents per litre on 15 December. Strangely, commodity prices actually rose nearly 2cpl during the week, although half of this was offset by the strengthening NZ dollar. But as we have said, margins were high so now they have fallen back a little but at current import costs a further pump price cut is fairly unlikely.

We’ve finally seen a small drop in fuel prices, with the national price of petrol and diesel falling 2 cents per litre to $2.13/litre and $1.47/litre respectively, although we are increasingly seeing more service stations around NZ, including the South Island, charging below the so-called ‘national price’. The price cut is overdue, but does not go far enough, with the landed cost of fuels falling over a cent since the 2cpl increase on 24 November – which wasn’t justified anyway! With current margins, the AA says a 4cpl drop would have been more appropriate. This time last year we were paying $1.99/litre for 91 octane and $1.29/litre for diesel.
