Oil prices jumped US$15 a barrel at the end of February, the highest price since August 2008, but oil companies held off raising retail prices until March due to the Christchurch earthquake, instead focussing on maintaining fuel supplies into the city. Even then, they staggered price increases over 8 days, but withheld raising prices in Christchurch for several weeks.
