Petrol and diesel prices as at 30 May 2019

A fairly large drop in commodity prices this week has seen the price of petrol drop 6 cents per litre, with diesel falling 3cpl. As it was, margins on both fuels had crept up to relatively high levels, so there is scope for diesel prices to fall further.

Fuel prices have risen on three occasions during May, totalling 10 cents per litre (cpl) on both petrol and diesel, the most recent a 5cpl increase on 21 May.

Earlier in the month prices fell by 2cpl following a drop in commodity prices, but these are now on the climb again due mostly to geopolitical issues, and some unplanned refinery shutdowns. Nevertheless, margins on both fuels remain strong (albeit diesel much lower than it has been recently) and there is scope for the margin to absorb some increases in the landed cost of fuel.
