AA Directions has five men’s short sleeve Kaleo Designs Kiwi Classic shirts to give away.
The Hawaiian shirt is synonymous with summer fun. It also evokes deeper connotations of cultural pride and the ‘Aloha spirit’ of love, peace and hospitality.
When Christine Makaweo – who hails from Hawaii originally – moved to Kerikeri in Northland, she quickly found the parallels between her native culture and Aotearoa.
Wanting to celebrate the unique spirit of our place, our people and our stories, Christine launched Kaleo, a clothing collection that encourages people to wear Kiwi culture on their sleeves.
“In Hawaii it’s all about celebrating our place,” Christine says. “When visitors come to Hawaii, they see that style and joy – we call it the ‘Aloha Spirit’ – they want to be a part of that, and the Hawaiian shirt commemorates that connection. That’s what I wanted to do in New Zealand.”
Kaleo – meaning “to express” in Hawaiian – blends Christine’s Pacific roots with artistic talent from New Zealand. Each print is produced in small runs and crafted into quality clothing in a relaxed style: men’s shirts, easy women’s pieces and golf polos that are comfortable, durable and travel-friendly.
The Kiwi Classic shirt range is created in collaboration with local artists who design prints inspired by something they love about Aotearoa.
“There’s no shortage of inspiration for new designs,” Christine says. “There is so much great culture and natural flora and fauna. We're having a lot of fun too; we’re a small business, and we like to say we’re winning Kiwi’s hearts one shirt at a time.”
