The 2026 season

New Zealand Opera’s 2026 season celebrates the power of the human voice with a nationwide line-up of standout local and international talent. The season opens with the intensity of Bluebeard’s Castle, welcomes back the much-loved Marriage of Figaro, and closes with a world-premiere staging of The Pearl Fishers. It’s bold, beautiful and a must-see, brought to life with the unmistakable spirit of New Zealand Opera.

Bluebeard's Castle (Bartok) 13 & 14 March

Auckland Town Hall, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

The 2026 season opens at Te Ahurei Toi o Tāmaki Auckland Arts Festival with a two-night presentation of the internationally acclaimed Bluebeard’s Castle from Theatre of Sound, a deeply moving reimagining of Bartók’s opera that follows a husband caring for his wife as she drifts between past and present. Praised as “Brilliant”, “Exceptional” and “Close to perfection”, this remarkable production arrives in Tāmaki Makaurau with support from Auckland Philharmonia at the Town Hall, giving local audiences their first chance to experience it live.

The Marriage of Figaro (Mozart) - 17, 19 & 21 June

St James Theatre, Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington.

Next in the mainstage calendar, Lindy Hume’s sumptuous production of The Marriage of Figaro finally makes its long-awaited Te Whanganui-a-Tara premiere. First scheduled for 2021 and widely regarded as one of the company’s most celebrated works of the past decade, it returns with its original creative team, a stellar cast of leading talent from Aotearoa and Australia, and the exceptional Freemasons Foundation New Zealand Opera Chorus. This revival delivers Figaro at its most gorgeous, most vibrant and truly unforgettable.

The Pearl Fishers (Bizet)

23, 25 & 27 September, Kiri Te Kanawa Theatre, Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.

14, 16 & 18 October, Isaac Theatre Royal, Ōtautahi Christchurch.

Finally, the 2026 season closes in spectacular fashion with the world-premiere staging of Bizet’s much-loved The Pearl Fishers, presented in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Ōtautahi Christchurch. Produced by New Zealand Opera in partnership with State Opera South Australia and directed by the acclaimed Stephen Barlow, this is a rare chance to experience a seldom-performed favourite in a fresh new light, brought to life by the exceptional voices of Te Korihi o NZ Opera.
