The West Coast has a number of extraordinary walks showcasing some of New Zealand’s most untamed and iconic sights. From a ten-minute stroll to a multi-day hike there is a walk to suit everyone.

The easy and accessible walk to Lake Matheson is one of the most popular walks on the West Coast, and it's no surprise as the track takes you through ancient native forest which then opens up to a magnificent view of the lake reflecting New Zealand’s highest peak - Mt Cook.

For more views, head to Lake Brunner for the 8 hour return Ara O Te King Track. Climb to the summit and take in the extraordinary views of the lake and Tasman Sea in the distance. If 8 hours sounds like a bit too much, there are several short walks easily accessed from the lakeside town of Moana.

The new Paparoa and Pike 29 Memorial Track offers a more challenging walk taking 2-3 days and taking you through alpine tops, limestone karst landscapes and thriving rainforests. From the Paparoa Track the Pike 29 Memorial Track leads to the site of the former Pike River Mine. This track was chosen as a memorial from those who lost loved ones in the 2010 Pike Mine disaster.

For the more adventurous, you may want to try your hand at hiking the Old Ghost Road. The 85km-long Old Ghost Road traverses majestic native forest, open tussock tops, river flats and forgotten valleys, providing days of adventure and spectacular huts for mountain bikers and trampers.

A visit to the West Coast would not be complete without exploring our world famous glaciers by foot! Both Franz Josef and Fox Glacier boast impressive walks with incredible views. Try the 30 minute Glacier Valley Walk at Fox Glacier or the more challenging 5 hour return Roberts Point Walking Track at Franz Josef Glacier.

There is no better way to truly experience the untouched wilderness that the West Coast has to offer than by walking through it..
