Waimangu Volcanic Valley

See How the World Began!
There's literally nothing like Rotorua's Waimangu Volcanic Valley anywhere else in the world. It's the world's youngest geothermal system, the only geothermal system created within written history, and the only one wholly created by a volcanic eruption. Here you'll find the world's largest hot spring and the largest geyser-like feature - awesome Inferno Crater. Follow nature trails through Waimangu's volcanic craters and along soak up the other-worldly atmosphere of our spectacular valley.View small and vigorously bubbling hot springs and geysers, newly forming geothermal sinter terraces, regenerating native forest and rare and unusual plants that have adapted to the hot earths of Waimangu - all evidence of a new ecosystem established out of the total devastation of a volcanic eruption. Waimangu's walks range from easy walking suitable for most levels of fitness to an advanced hike requiring good fitness. Most popular is the 4km walk offering sweeping views over Waimangu's mighty geothermal sights and Lake Rotomahana, last resting place of the famous Pink & White Terraces. The Mt Haszard Advanced Hiking Trail includes panoramic vistas of the valley and surrounding region. You'll view craters formed by the Mt Tarawera eruption which have been inaccessible to the public for over 100 years. You'll see Fairy Crater, 56 metres deep, its steep sides formed from lava bluffs, and Black Crater with the massive lava outcrops of Mt Haszard on one side and steaming pink and red soil on the other. Our popular cruise on Lake Rotomahana will show you lakeside geothermal features which can only be seen from our vessel. Listen to the skipper's informative commentary as you relax on your cruise, or follow it from one of our many foreign language printed guide sheets.Waimangu is a Multi Eco Tourism Award Winner and is open every day from 8.30am. Last admission is 3.45pm (January 4.45pm). Last boat cruise at 3.15pm (January 4.10pm).
