“You’ve got the cool car today!” The woman at the Hertz desk says. “I wondered who was taking that one out.”
Parked up and ready to go, the white Ford Mustang sits sleek and muscular in the Hertz garage. I ease it onto the busy city street, heading in the opposite direction to commuter traffic.
The Mustang coasts over Auckland’s Harbour Bridge with a hearty gargle. Below, the last remnants of morning fog obscure the sea. Compared to my hybrid daily driver, this car is so loud! It’s an engine that might trigger anxiety in today’s high-cost climate, dollars ticking up with each rumble but, for a brief window, taking a less economical but extremely fun vehicle for a spin is exhilarating.
