Ring in Chinese New Year in Auckland at the bright, colourful, cultural extravaganza of the Lantern Festival.

Each year, Auckland is transformed into a wonderland of lights and lanterns for the biggest cultural celebration event in New Zealand.

For 2023 you can wander through the Manukau Sports Bowl on dusk and be dazzled by the vast array of handmade lanterns.

With stalls selling Asian crafts and food from dumplings to doughnuts, music and martial arts displays, kids rides, karaoke, acrobats, shadow puppets and a fireworks finale, the Lantern Festival is a highlight of the Auckland events calendar.

The Lantern Festival attracts huge crowds – more than 250,000 people attended in 2019 – so it’s best to use public transport and avoid traffic jams.
