Honda Super One arrives in New Zealand

Honda has always had a knack for building small cars with big personalities. From the iconic City and Civic through to the CRX and quirky Beat, the Japanese brand understands how to make compact motoring enjoyable. 

Now, Honda New Zealand is adding a new chapter to this story with the arrival of the Honda Super One: a bold urban EV that blends retro charm with next generation electric technology.

First revealed at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2025 and based on Honda's N-One e: foundations, the Super One is inspired by Japan's famous Keijidosha light vehicle class. Honda Product Planning Manager Thomas Sambell says that this latest model is part of a lineage stretching back nearly 60 years to the Honda N360 of 1967.

Despite its compact footprint, the Super One makes a strong first impression. Its flared stance, distinctive front end and 15-inch alloy wheels give it plenty of character. Clever aerodynamic touches such as front wheel arch vents help cool components while also reducing drag, and in a nod to Honda's sustainability efforts, sections of the front bumper are made from recycled Honda bumper materials.

Inside, the Super One feels surprisingly spacious. Honda's clever 'Long Mode' and 'Tall Mode' magic seats maximise cabin flexibility, while the uncluttered dashboard creates an open and airy feel.

Front sports seats, a heated two-spoke steering wheel, configurable ambient lighting and a premium Bose eight-speaker audio system with a built-in subwoofer help elevate the experience well beyond what you might expect from a city car.

Power comes from a 30kWh battery pack paired with an electric motor producing between 40kW and 70kW depending on drive mode. Honda claims a driving range of up to 253km NEDC not WTLP, making it ideal for weekday commuting and urban adventures. Charging takes around 13 hours from a standard household outlet, while a wall charger can replenish the battery in approximately four hours.

On Auckland's Viaduct Harbour streets, the Super One functioned exactly as a city EV should. It's peppy, brisk and responsive. Not fast, but just right. The compact dimensions make squeezing through traffic and slipping into tight car parks easy.

Then there's Boost Mode, which is where the fun begins. Honda has added simulated engine sounds through five speakers and a virtual seven-speed transmission complete with gear shift sensations so you can hear, feel and see the driving experience. It adds a level of real driving engagement that is often missing from modern EVs.

As a four-seater, buyers will need to keep space expectations in check, but for families sticking mainly to the city, the Super One has enough range to comfortably cover a week's worth of school runs, shopping trips and commuting between charges.

Starting at $41,990, with the black-roofed Kuro Edition priced at $44,990, the Honda Super One delivers something refreshingly different. Trusted Honda reliability, clever packaging and genuine electric fun make it one of the most exciting small EVs to arrive in New Zealand this year. Honda calls it the next chapter. After driving it, that chapter looks well worth reading.
