To ensure the claim process goes smoothly, submit your claim as soon as possible and include all relevant details and supporting documentation, such as police reports, valuations, medical reports, receipts, or proof of ownership.
Using the online claims portal can help speed up the processing of your claim.
If you're unable to use the portal, download and complete a claim form, then email or post the form along with your supporting documents. We recommend keeping a scan or photocopy of the originals for your records.
For more information, head to our make a claim page.
If you have a complaint about the product or the service you received, please contact us and we will put you in contact with someone who can help to resolve the complaint. For more information, head to our complaints process page.
We aim to process your claim as quickly as possible once all required documentation has been received. While processing times can vary depending on the complexity of your claim and the information provided, most straightforward claims are assessed within 10 working days. If additional information or documents are needed, processing may take a little longer.
You can help speed up the process by submitting all necessary supporting documents—such as receipts, police or medical reports, and proof of travel—when you first lodge your claim.
Once your claim is approved, payment is usually made promptly via your nominated bank account.
You have 21 days from the date of purchase to change your mind and request a full refund, provided you have not begun your trip, made a claim or intend on making a claim.
If you purchase your policy before your trip commences, cover for Amendment or Cancellation Costs starts as soon as you’ve made payment.
All other benefits, such as Medical or Delayed Luggage Allowance, begin when you leave home to start your journey.
If you buy the policy after you have already departed, there is a 72-hour no cover window. This means there is no cover under any section of the policy for any event that has occurred already or that arises within the first 72 hours of buying the policy.
Please check government travel advisories, because travelling to a country or region with a “Do not travel” warning issued by the New Zealand government on the www.safetravel.govt.nz website, may limit your cover or you may have no cover at all.
Read our Policy Wording. Being well-informed about what’s included—and what’s not—helps protect you from surprises later.
Yes, these can all be found in the Policy Wording.
It contains limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions that may apply, so please read it before you go.
Yes, you can tailor your AA Travel Insurance policy by choosing the plan and cover variations that suit your specific travel plans. Here are a few ways to customise your cover:
Pick your plan: You can choose from options like International Comprehensive, International Essentials, Domestic, or Domestic Cancellation, depending on the destinations and types of benefits you need.
Customise your excess amount: If you opt for a higher excess, your overall premium may be lower. Excess options vary by plan.
Choose your cancellation cover: Our International Essentials and International Comprehensive plans automatically include a limited amount of cancellation cover. You can increase the amount of cancellation cover when you purchase your policy. The Domestic Cancellation plan will also allow you to choose your cancellation cover. Our Domestic plan has a $10,000 set limit.
Add optional extras: Whether it’s Cruise Cover for ocean or sea voyages, Adventure or Adventure Plus for higher-risk activities, Snow Sports or Snow Sports Plus for winter activities, or even a Business Pack for work trips, you can include as many cover variations as are supported by your chosen plan. Please note, the cover variations available do vary by your chosen plan type.
Declare existing medical conditions: Some existing medical conditions can be automatically covered under our Policy Wording at no extra cost, provided you or the other traveller(s) named on the policy meet all the automatic coverage criteria. If you or the other travellers named on the policy require cover for additional medical conditions or you have conditions that don’t meet the criteria, we may be able to cover those conditions as well. Simply complete a health assessment when you are quoting your policy.
Increase item limits (where available): If you or the other travellers named on the policy have particularly high-value items like cameras or laptops, you may be able to increase certain per-item limits for an additional premium under our International Comprehensive and Domestic plans.
Yes, you can add multiple eligible cover variations to your base policy (for example, Cruise Cover and Adventure Plus) if they’re supported by the plan you choose. Simply select each cover variation you need when you purchase your policy online, over the phone, or in person at an AA Centre.
Yes, you can include dependent children at no extra cost, provided they meet the criteria outlined in the Policy Wording. "Accompanied children" means your children or grandchildren as well as one non-related child for each adult policyholder. The children must be identified on the Certificate of Insurance and travelling with you on the journey.
Each child:
- Must be under the age of 21 years.
- Must not be in full-time employment.
- Must be financially dependent on their usual guardian.
You can usually add up to 4 adult travellers and 6 dependants to your policy, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria and are named on your policy. You’ll need to add every traveller’s details during the purchase process.
If you require cover for a large group of travellers, please contact us.
Yes, you can make certain changes to your policy after you’ve purchased it, as long as your journey hasn’t started and you haven’t made a claim. Some changes that can occur include updating traveller details, amending travel dates, adding destinations, or including cover variations like Cruise Cover or Snow Sports Plus. Some changes may affect your premium, require additional assessment or for you to cancel your current policy and purchase a new policy.
Please note, unlike our other cover variations, you cannot add Cancellation Plus after your policy has been issued.
To request changes, please contact us as soon as possible. We will be able to confirm what adjustments can be made and whether any new documentation is needed.
Our International Essentials, International Comprehensive and Domestic plan automatically includes a standard amount of cancellation cover. If the standard amount isn’t enough to cover all your non-refundable, prepaid travel expenses—such as flights, accommodation, tours, and other bookings—the International Essentials and International Comprehensive plans allow you to choose the level of cancellation cover you prefer from the available options when purchasing your policy. With our Domestic Cancellation plan, you can also select your preferred level of cover.
It’s recommended to select a cancellation amount that matches the total value of all non-refundable expenses for everyone listed on the policy, to ensure you’re adequately protected if you need to cancel unexpectedly. If you’d like information about the appropriate cover for your trip, please refer to your Policy Wording or contact us.
Rental vehicle insurance excess cover helps pay the vehicle excess (the amount you are liable to pay) if your hired car, campervan, or motorhome is damaged or stolen during your trip for approvable circumstances. This benefit is available with the International Comprehensive plan and the Domestic plan up to $10,000.
If you plan to hire a vehicle on your trip, consider choosing a plan that includes rental vehicle insurance excess can help protect you from unexpected out-of-pocket costs if something goes wrong. For full details on conditions, limits, and exclusions, please refer to your Policy Wording or contact us.
With our Domestic plan, we also provide a benefit for your personal car or motorcycle if stolen or damaged while in your control on your journey. To get this bonus cover, you’ll need to be on the Domestic plan and have comprehensive car or motorcycle insurance on your own vehicle. The limit for this bonus cover is $2,500.
Our Domestic travel insurance offers important benefits that go beyond what’s available through public healthcare or ACC in New Zealand. The Domestic plan provides cover for amendment or cancellation costs if you need to change or cancel your trip unexpectedly, emergency medical and dental expenses up to $1,5001, and cover for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage up to $5,0002. It also includes rental vehicle insurance excess cover up to $10,000, protection for travel delays, missed connections, and personal liability up to $200,000.
For full details of what’s included and excluded, please refer to your Policy Wording or contact us Our team will be happy to help you understand the cover available for your next trip around New Zealand.
1Cover is for no more than 12 months from the onset of the illness, condition or injury.
2Sub-limits apply. See the Policy Wording.
With AA Travel Insurance, a single trip policy provides cover for one specific journey, with set departure and return dates, and ends as soon as you complete that trip, or at the end of the period of insurance, whichever occurs first. This is ideal if you’re planning a one-off holiday or business trip.
An annual multi-trip policy, on the other hand, covers you for multiple journeys within a 12-month period, with each individual trip needing to fall within the maximum trip duration specified. This means you can travel as often as you like during the year, without needing to buy a new policy for each journey, as long as every trip meets the conditions stated in your policy.
For full details about eligibility, trip duration limits, and what’s covered under each type of policy, please refer to your Policy Wording or contact us.
Yes, AA Travel Insurance provides cover for travel delays and missed connections under the International Comprehensive plan, International Essentials plan, and the Domestic plan.
If your scheduled transport is delayed for more than the minimum period specified in your Policy Wording (for example, due to severe weather or mechanical breakdown), these plans can reimburse you for additional accommodation, meals, and other reasonable expenses up to the policy limits. If you miss a pre-booked connection because of an insured event, you may also be covered for the reasonable costs of catching up to your original itinerary.
The Domestic Cancellation plan does not include cover for travel delays or missed connections.
For full details on benefit limits, waiting periods, and what is considered an insured event, please refer to the Policy Wording.
Yes, AA Travel Insurance provides cover for valuables like cameras, laptops, and jewellery, subject to the per-item and total limits specified in your Policy Wording. For example, under the International Comprehensive plan, standard per-item limits apply (such as $3,000 for a laptop or camera and $1,500 for a phone). If you are travelling with high value items that exceed these standard limits, you can arrange extra cover for specified items by paying an additional premium—this option is only available with the International Comprehensive and Domestic plan. The extra amount you add is in addition to the standard luggage item limit.
On the International Essentials plan, valuables are covered up to the stated per-item and total limits, but you cannot increase these limits by specifying items.
To ensure your valuables are protected, it’s important to consider listing high value items and review the applicable limits and conditions in the Policy Wording.
Cover-More (NZ) Limited (Cover-More) arranges, distributes and administers AA Travel Insurance on behalf of NZAA. They carry out various functions including processing claims for AA Travel Insurance customers.
The Cover-More app is designed to help AA Travel Insurance customers stay informed and safe while travelling. It monitors worldwide events and sends real-time notifications to your smartphone if potential threats are developing nearby, helping you avoid risky situations. The app also assists you in navigating to a safer location when needed, and connects you directly to our 24/7 emergency assistance team, with just a tap.
To access the full benefits of the app, you’ll need your AA Travel Insurance Policy Number, which is found in your Certificate of Insurance. The app requires Wi-Fi or an active mobile data plan to deliver alerts and enable quick access to assistance. Standard call charges may apply when using the emergency call feature, depending on your phone plan and location.
The app is available on the App Store or Google Play.
AA Travel Insurance provides cover for some medical conditions automatically, provided yours or the other travellers’ named on the policy medical condition(s) meet all the automatic coverage criteria and you do not have any medical conditions outside the specified covered list.
If you or the other travellers named on the policy have medical conditions outside of this list, we may still be able to offer cover. It’s essential to declare all known conditions, even if they are stable. This step must be completed for every person named on your policy.
You can declare these conditions by completing a health assessment. This can be done when you get a quote online, over the phone, or in person at an AA Centre. Once the health assessment is complete, we’ll let you know whether an additional premium applies or if we’re unable to insure the condition.
We may also be able to add cover for certain medical conditions after you’ve purchased your policy—provided no existing health assessment is already attached to the name of the person applying for the cover and you have not yet started your journey.
Some existing medical conditions can be covered under our Policy Wording at no extra cost. Certain conditions are covered automatically provided all the criteria listed in the Policy Wording is met.
However, if you or the other travellers named on the policy declare a medical condition that is not automatically covered, or does not meet the criteria for automatic cover, and we agree to provide cover for that condition, an additional premium may apply. This is because it constitutes a separate cover variation that offers benefits beyond our base policy.
There are specific policy restrictions relating to pregnancy under our policy that you should be aware of. Cover is only provided for serious and unexpected pregnancy complications up to and including the 24th week of pregnancy (23 weeks and 6 days)1.
There is no cover for childbirth or for medical expenses related to the health or care of a newborn child born overseas, regardless of the stage of pregnancy. If you or another traveller named on the policy is pregnant and has experienced complications in this or a previous pregnancy, has a multiple pregnancy (e.g. twins), or conceived through medical assistance, cover must be applied for and approved before travelling.
Routine check-ups, elective scans, and planned medical care related to pregnancy are not covered.
Please speak with your GP before travelling—especially during pregnancy—to ensure your destination is suitable, receive any necessary vaccinations, and obtain a medical certificate if required by the airline. For full details and to confirm whether your circumstances can be covered by our policy, please refer to your Policy Wording or contact us. Our team can help clarify what is and isn’t included for your situation.
1Gestational age is measured in weeks and days and is calculated from the last known date of your menstrual period or calculated from staging ultrasound.
Yes, AA Travel Insurance provides certain cover for COVID-19 under the International Comprehensive, International Essentials, and Domestic plan. If you are diagnosed with COVID-19 while overseas, these plans can provide cover for your overseas medical expenses and may cover additional accommodation and travel costs if you are diagnosed with COVID-19 and a doctor confirms in writing you are unfit to travel, subject to the terms and limits outlined in your Policy Wording.
However, cover does not extend to government-mandated quarantine, border closures, or travel bans. If you cancel or change your trip due to border restrictions, closed borders, or government-imposed lockdowns, these are not covered events under your policy.
For full details on what is and isn’t covered in relation to COVID-19—including any limits, sub-limits, and specific exclusions—please refer to your Policy Wording.
Ocean and sea cruises are not covered automatically under AA Travel Insurance. If your itinerary involves a sea or ocean cruise of two nights or more outside New Zealand’s Territorial Sea, you need to add Cruise cover to your policy to be insured for claims that are related to the cruise or occur onboard the cruise.
If you decide to go on a cruise without adding Cruise cover, any claims specifically related to the cruise portion of your trip (such as a cancelled cruise, onboard medical, cabin confinement benefits, or missed ports) will not be covered by your policy. This means you would be personally responsible for those costs if something were to go wrong.
You don’t need Cruise cover if your cruise is:
- only for one night.
- a river cruise.
- a ferry trip.
- is always within 12 nautical miles of the coast of New Zealand.
- a sailing trip, for example, around the islands of Croatia, Greece or the Whitsundays in Australia. Note: sailing in international waters is not covered.
For cruises that are only around New Zealand, but exceed 12 nautical miles off the coast, please select ‘New Zealand - Domestic Cruise’ as your destination when you buy your policy.
Cruise cover provides cover for medical costs on-board, ship-to-shore medical cover, sea sickness cover, confinement to your cabin, missed ports, and shore excursions. Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions.
You can add Cruise cover during the policy purchase process. When you get a quote simply select Cruise cover before you finalise payment.
For cruises that are only around New Zealand, but exceed 12 nautical miles off the coast, please select ‘New Zealand - Domestic Cruise’ as your destination when you buy your policy.
Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions. If you’d like more information on our Cruise cover, please contact us.
Yes, there is an additional premium for Cruise, because it is a separate cover variation that provides added benefits beyond our base policy.
You will need to add Snow Sports or Snow Sports Plus cover if you plan on skiing, snowboarding or snowmobiling on your journey. Without the cover you won’t be insured for your snow related activities.
Our Snow Sports cover provides cover for on-piste skiing or boarding, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling under normal resort conditions.
Snow Sports Plus cover broadens that cover to include off-piste skiing or boarding if you follow local safety advice and licensed guides, plus heli-skiing if run by a certified tour operator.
If you are entering or training in competitions or ignoring ski field rules, we are unable to cover you, even with this cover variation.
Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions.
You can add Snow Sports cover or Snow Sports Plus cover during the policy purchase process. The International Comprehensive plan and the Domestic plan give you the option to add Snow Sports cover or Snow Sports Plus cover. The International Essentials plan gives you only the option to add Snow Sports cover.
When you obtain your quote select your preferred option. Make sure to pick the option that best matches your intended winter activities before finalising payment.
Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions. If you’d like more information on our snow sports cover options, please contact us.
Yes, there is an additional premium for Snow Sports cover and Snow Sports Plus cover, because it is a separate cover variation that provides added benefits beyond our base policy.
Absolutely. Our Business Pack cover variation can cover you for lost or stolen business equipment, plus emergency hire or sending a backup staff member if you need to head home urgently.
Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions.
It provides cover for business equipment that is lost, stolen, or damaged, meaning you can claim for repair or replacement costs.
It may also pay for emergency equipment hire if your workplace essentials go missing and you need to continue your assignments.
If you are called home, it can cover costs involved in sending a replacement staff member to complete your work commitments.
Please note, it remains your responsibility to keep items secure; claims for leaving items unattended in a public place can be declined.
Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions.

Read our Policy Wording for a full list of limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions. If you’d like additional information, please contact us. We’ll be happy to answer any questions regarding your cover.
Yes, there is an additional premium for the Business Pack, because it is a separate cover variation that provides added benefits beyond our base policy.
Cancellation Plus is available with our International Comprehensive or Domestic plan, allowing you to claim up to 75% of your unused, prepaid travel costs if you cancel for reasons typically excluded by our base policy. Applicable scenarios could include having your leave unexpectedly revoked by your employer, facing sudden financial burdens, or simply changing your mind—provided you meet the specified time frames.
To be eligible for Cancellation Plus, you must add this cover at the time you purchase your base policy, and your trip must not be scheduled to start within the next seven days from the date you buy your policy. If you cancel your trip, you must do so more than 48 hours before your scheduled departure date for a claim to be considered under this benefit.
Cancellation Plus Cover applies to travel costs that you pay for after you purchase your policy and includes any travel costs that you may have paid for in the 48 hours before the you purchased your policy. The total payout is capped at lesser of 75% of your cancellation sum insured or 75% of your total cancellation costs. In any case we will not cover more than $10,000 per policy, and you cannot add Cancellation Plus after your policy has been issued.
Cancellation Plus Cover has some limitations. You might not be able to claim under Cancellation Plus Cover if an external event is stopping you travelling to your destination. This is because Cancellation Plus Cover does not provide cover for claims that occur due to war, government travel bans or widespread events that limit global travel.
For full details of all conditions and exclusions, please refer to the Policy Wording or contact us.
You can add Cancellation Plus Cover during the policy purchase process if your departure date is more than 7 days in the future, the cover is available for your chosen destination and if you select our International Comprehensive or Domestic plan. When you get a quote simply select Cancellation Plus Cover before you complete your payment.
If you’d like advice to make sure Cancellation Plus Cover meets your specific cancellation requirements, please contact us.
Yes, there is an additional premium for Cancellation Plus Cover, because it is a separate cover variation that provides added benefits beyond our base policy.
These leisure activities are included under our base policy—provided you follow local regulations and safety guidelines—without the need to add Adventure or Adventure Plus cover.

You should add Adventure cover or Adventure Plus cover if your trip includes sports or activities that go beyond what’s automatically covered in our base policy (e.g., higher-altitude trekking, skydiving, or more extreme pursuits). Adventure cover generally covers intermediate-level activities, while Adventure Plus extends to a wider range of higher-risk sports.
If you engage in more adventurous activities that are listed under one of our cover variations, without this added cover, any claims related to them (such as medical costs resulting from an injury) would not be covered by your policy. This means you would be personally responsible for covering those expenses.
Adventure and Adventure Plus cover provide cover for activities excluded from our base policy, such as certain types of rock climbing, longer treks at higher altitudes, or skydiving (excluding BASE jumping). You can find the exact list of covered activities, limits, sub-limits, and conditions in our Policy Wording. We recommend reviewing this thoroughly to ensure your chosen cover variations match your intended activities.
Adventure cover or Adventure Plus cover is available on the International Comprehensive or Domestic plan. You can add Adventure cover or Adventure Plus cover during the policy purchase process. When you get a quote, simply select Adventure cover or Adventure Plus cover before you finalise payment.
Read our Policy Wording for a complete list of sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions. If you’d like more information on Adventure cover or Adventure Plus cover, contact us.
Yes, there is an additional premium for Adventure cover and Adventure Plus cover, because it is a separate cover variation that provides added benefits beyond our base policy.
Our base policy covers casual riding of motorcycles or mopeds up to and including 250cc, provided you hold the appropriate licence if you are riding (or the driver does, if you are a passenger), and you wear a helmet. There is no cover for racing, riding in a professional capacity or motorcross. If you’re unsure whether your planned ride is automatically covered, please check our Policy Wording or contact us.
Please note, there is no cover under ‘Personal liability’ for any claims related to aircraft or any mechanically propelled vehicle including motorcycles or mopeds.
You should add Motorcycle / Moped Riding Plus if you plan to hire or ride any two-wheeled vehicle with an engine capacity above 250cc. This cover variation is also essential if you have plans to engage in more extensive riding that goes beyond casual tourism under base policy guidelines.
To be eligible for Motorcycle / Moped Riding Plus cover you must be the registered owner of a motorcycle in New Zealand, and the motorcycle you own must have an engine capacity equal to or greater than the one you are hiring, you must have a valid New Zealand motorcycle rider’s licence, and have held this licence for at least 5 years. If you are a passenger, the driver must hold a licence valid for riding that vehicle, you must wear a helmet and the motorcycle or moped must be hired.
Please check our Policy Wording. Limits, sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions apply.
If you ride a motorcycle or moped above 250cc—or participate in higher-risk riding—without this added cover, any claims related to your participation in the activity (for example, medical costs following an accident) would not be covered by your policy. You would be personally liable for those expenses.
Motorcycle / Moped Riding Plus cover provides cover for situations involving engine capacities above 250cc, provided you meet the policy requirements (including holding the correct licence and wearing a helmet). The exact limits, sub-limits, and conditions are detailed in our Policy Wording. You should review it carefully to ensure this cover variation matches your intended riding plans.
Motorcycle / Moped Riding Plus cover is available on the International Comprehensive or Domestic plan. You can add Motorcycle / Moped Riding Plus cover during the policy purchase process. When you get a quote simply select the Motorcycle / Moped Riding Plus cover option before you finalise payment. This ensures your policy extends to higher-capacity riding.
You can read our Policy Wording for sub-limits, conditions, and exclusions. If you’d like more information, please contact us. We’ll be happy to help you determine whether you need this cover variation for your upcoming trip.
Yes, there is an additional premium for Motorcycle/Moped Riding Plus cover, because it is a separate cover variation that provides added benefits beyond our base policy.
