What's included?

You can use Serious Illness Cover (sometimes referred to as 'trauma' or 'critical condition' cover) for treatment costs, time off work, rehabilitation, mortgage payments, or anything else that helps you focus on your recovery. 

A tax-free lump sum is paid if you have a heart attack or stroke, are diagnosed with cancer, or become seriously incapacitated (as defined under the policy).

If you’re diagnosed with certain types of early-stage cancer for the first time, we’ll make a partial lump sum payment of 20% of your cover amount (up to $100,000) helping you manage costs early on. We’ll only pay the Early-Stage Cancer Benefit once for this cover. If we pay the Early-Stage Cancer Benefit, that amount will be deducted from your Serious Illness Cover. Your premiums will be reduced to reflect the new, lower cover amount.

Your cover amount increases each year on your policy anniversary by either 2% or the Consumer Price Index (CPI) — whichever is higher, up to the cover limit (unless you tell us that you don't want your cover to be adjusted before your policy anniversary date).

If you’re experiencing financial hardship, unemployment or bankruptcy (as set out in the policy) you can apply for a premium holiday for up to six months and keep your policy in place. You'll still be covered while you're on the premium holiday.

Things you should know

  • You need to be aged 18–59 and in New Zealand when you apply, a New Zealand citizen, resident, or hold a valid visa for at least the next 12 months. Cover stays in place until your 70th birthday.
  • You must survive 14 days after the defined diagnosis, and you must not have had any signs, symptoms or diagnosis of cancer, early-stage cancer, heart attack or stroke in the 90 days after your cover starts (or restarts). Claims directly or indirectly caused by an intentional self-inflicted act are not covered.
  • You can apply online, at an AA Centre, or over the phone with our friendly New Zealand based team. 
  • There's a 30 day no-obligation period - if you change your mind during this time, 100% of the premiums you've paid will be refunded, provided you have not made any claims.
